CERTIFIED INDUSTRIAL GAS INSPECTIONS & SAFETY AUDITS
GAS SAFETY SERVICES
James Giles Plumbing Pty Ltd (JGP), based in Brisbane, QLD, provides expert gas safety and compliance services across Queensland and nationally. Our focus is on ensuring Type B gas appliances, un-odourised gas systems, and industrial gas installations are safe, compliant, and efficient. We work with clients across a wide range of industries, from mining and food processing to medical and energy production, providing approvals, risk assessments, audits, and system monitoring.
Our team combines regulatory expertise, industry experience, and technical skill to manage complex gas systems, including hazardous gases, coal seam gas, biogas, and unodourised gas applications. With our partner, Australian Gas and Combustion Consultants, we deliver thorough compliance, safety assurance, and practical solutions for safe gas operation.
TYPE B GAS SAFETY & APPROVALS
In Queensland, all Type B gas devices must be approved by an authorised Type B approval authority before installation and use. Unlike Type A appliances, which are mass-produced and come with an approval badge (e.g., cooktops, fryers, room heaters), Type B appliances require formal approval and certification.
Justin Giles from James Giles Plumbing is an Authorised Type B Appliance Approval Body under section 733(2) of the Queensland Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004. He can approve the following gas devices for installation and use in Queensland:
- All simple S1, S2, S3, and S4 gas devices and appliances.
- All complex C1, C2, and C3 gas devices and appliances.
We ensure that Type B appliance installations comply with Australian Standards and regulatory requirements, providing safe and legally compliant operation.
Type B Systems, Devices and Appliances are commonly found in commercial, industrial, manufacturing, food processing, mining, energy and gas production sites. A Type B device is defined in AS/NZS 5601 as an appliance that produces heat/light/energy for consumption with a gas consumption in excess of 10 MJ/Hour but sizes can very ranging from 10 mj/h to appliances exceeding 3000 GJ/Hour.

Only an authorised Type B Appliance Approval Body, such as Justin Giles from James Giles Plumbing, can approve Type B appliances for installation and use.
What is the difference between Type A and Type B gas appliances?
Type A appliances are mass-produced with approval badges (e.g., cooktops, room heaters). Type B appliances are custom or industrial devices that require formal approval before use.
What are unodourised gas systems?
Un-odourised gas systems use gases without added odourants. They require strict risk assessments, detection, shutdown systems, and staff training to operate safely.
Which regulations govern gas safety in Queensland?
Gas safety in Queensland is regulated under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004, the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004, and the Petroleum and Gas (Safety) Regulation 2018.
What industries do you provide safety assessments for?
We provide services across coal seam gas, biogas, energy generation, food processing, mining, medical gases, and industrial installations.
How often should gas-fired appliances be checked?
Type B appliances require 6- and 12-monthly safety checks in accordance with Australian Standards. Routine monitoring and servicing are also recommended.
Do you handle hazardous gas and risk assessments?
Yes. We assess hazardous gases, un-odourised systems, biogas, coal seam gas, and gas fields, ensuring compliance, safety, and risk mitigation.
